The USA Congress needed funds to conduct the efforts of the Civil War and
these records are a list of people who were assessed for taxes, what they were taxed for, the rate and the amount either due or paid.
People were not only taxed on income but also on the number of animals they kept. Some occupations required a licence which was just another form
of taxation. Interesting to note that people were also taxed on any carriages and gold watches they might have.
