Incendiary Fire
Mr Robert Archer, of the Lodge Farm, near Ashborne, some three years since took a large farm in Cheshire which the Crown had then recently reclaimed from the ancient forest of Delamere. The peasantry residing on the confines of the forest resented this as an infringement of their suppositious forest rights, and they have on several occasions uttered threats against Mr Archer's resident farm bailiff, and other servants. These threats culminated in a murderous assault on the bailiff, John Foskett, and a labourer named Thomas Dean, by three men residing in the neighbourhood. Foskett's left arm was broken and Dean's skull fractured. The men absconded, but the Cheshire police succeeded in apprehending Willingshaw, and he was accordingly taken before Thomas Woodhouse, Esq, on the after noon of 30th November, and remanded for further hearing. On the morning of the 1st of December, Foskett, the bailiff, was awakened about half-past four in the morning by observing a strong light in the stackyard; he alarmed the other servants, and they found that three stacks were on fire, one being fired in two places.
The engines of the Bridgewater Trustees quickly attended, but the flames had gained such an ascendancy that thirteen stacks, containing the produce of 120 acres, were totally destroyed. The adjoining farm buildings were saved by the exertions of the fireman, though the brickwork of a shed was at one time red hot; the damage sustained is estimated between 1300L and 1400L. Mr Archer is, we believe, insured in the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Fire Office for about one half of that amount.
On Saturday, Mr Brittlebank, solicitor of Ashborne, attended before the Cheshire magistrates to prosecute Thomas Willingshaw for the assault on Foskett, and he was committed to Chester Castle for trial at the March Assizes.
