Marylebone - Capture of Two Young Thieves
James Smith, aged 14, of 1 Stephen Street, Tottenham Court Road, and Charles Foskett, aged 13, of 9 Wells Buildings, Well Street, were charged before Mr d'Eyncourt with loitering at Cavendish Square and Harley Street, for the purposes of commiting a felony. - About five o'clock on Sunday afternoon the prisoners were seen by Detective constables George King and Hammond, of the D division, loitering about Cavendish Square. The prisoner Smith went down the area of Dr Adams, 15 Henrietta Street, and after a short time he returned and joined the other prisoner. They went into Harley Street, and Smith went to a milk can that was standing by an area, He opened the lid of the can and took some broken bread and meat, and was about to make off with it, when he and the other prisoner were apprehended. Foskett is a very bad boy, and his mother can do nothing with him. He has been away from home since Wednesday last, and had been sentenced to fourteen days imprisonment for being drunk and disorderly. The other prisoner is a very respectable boy, but unfortunately he has been led away by some bad companions. Mr d'Eyncourt remanded the prisoners to the House of Detention for a week, and on the next occasion Foskett will be sent to a reformatory.
