Joined the Royal Navy (K14473) at Devonport on 27 Apr 1912 for 12 year engagement. He was 5ft 9 and 4/5in tall, chest 40.5in, dark brown hair, brown eyes and fresh complexion. He had a scar on his right leg from an operation for Variocele(?).
He served on Vivid II; Carnarvon, Vivid II and then Warrior, where he was promoted to Acting Leading Stoker on 30 Aug 1915 and Leading Stoker on 9 Mar 1916. He was killed in action on 31 May 1916.
