Loss of two lives by Fire
On Monday afternoon Mr C J Carttar, coroner for West Kent, held an inquiry at the Globe Tavern, Lower Deptford Road, into the circumstances attending the death of Mr Henry Burgess, aged forty-one, tar distiller, and Henry Foskett, aged forty-two, a working man, who met their deaths at a fire which occurred at a pitch and tar manufactory, situated on the banks of the Surrey Canal, at Deptford, and belonging to the first-named deceased, on Saturday morning last. The jury returned a verdict that the deceased met their deaths from suffocation and other injuries received at the above fire.
