A Wesleyan Objecting to be Sworn
At the Burslem Police Court on Tuesday, a collier named Edward Malkin was charged with stealing a flannel jacket, the property of Philip Fosket, banksman. Mr George Dunn, assistant to Mr Jesper, clothier, Hanley, was called to identify the jacket produced, the prosecutor having purchased his jacket from Mr Jesper. On the Testament being placed in Mr Dunn's hand, he intimated that he objected to be sworn…… Mr Dunn, however, afterwards gave in, saying he would be sworn rather than that the ends of justice should be frustrated. He was then sworn, and identified the jacket as that made for the prosecutor by Mr Jesper. The prisoner pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two months imprisonment with hard labour.
