Ockbrook and Borrowash
Testimonial to Retiring Stationmaster
Mr R Foskett, who has been in charge of Borrowash Station for the past ten years has been promoted to the charge of Hemel Hempsted Station, and a thoroughly representative gathering of residents was held in the Wilmot Arms, Borrowash, on Wednesday evening to bid him farewell and present him with an illuminated address and a purse of gold, £10.10s. The chair was occupied by Mr W Mailslieu, JP, amongst those present..(long list of names) An excellent vocal and instrumental concert had been arranged by Messrs Morris and Henshaw.
Mr W Mallalieu, JP, in making the presentation, said in modern life, perhaps, the most indispensable thing was a railway, but however important the material, the safety, comfort and colerity of the railway was entirely due to the men who had the working of it. It was most pleasant when they commenced their journeys to know they were in good hands, and for the last ten years they had had at Bowwowash as good an official as they could possibly have. He was not flattering Mr Foskett when he said that during the ten years he had filled the important post as stationmaster his services had been rendered in an exemplary manner. It was not only that everything was done rightly, but in a happy manner, and with the greatest desire to do justice to everyone who used Borrowash station. They all deeply regretted for their own sakes that Mr Foskett's years of office in Borrowash were shortly to be over, but their sorrow was tempered by knowing that Mr Foskett was going to an even more important station than Borrowash. He was pleased that the Midland Railway Company had recognised the great services he had rendered that Company. Mr Foskett had now general respect apart from the railway people themselves. The address would show those amongst whom he went how they in Ockbrook and Borrowash appreciated his services, and lead them to expect the same courtesy from him, and he was sure they would not be disappointed. Mr Foskett, speaking with some emotion, briefly acknowledged the gift. He could only thank them all for their kindness from the bottom of his heart. (continues)
