The Guy Fawkes of Protection
About a year ago, if we remember rightly, the nation was startled from its propriety by a dark and ominous intimation bearing the signature of “Paul Foskett”, that he, the said Paul, had a plan which was in politics what Warner's long range is in the science of projectiles, a plan to blow everybody up, nobody knows how. The ripening hopes of Free Trade were to be scattered to the winds, the darkening prospects of Protection were to be instantaneously illuminated, hope and despair were to be transposed, the cloud that had settled on the thoughtful brow of Mr G F Young was to contract the forehead of Mr Cobden, and the cares which racked the soul of the Marquis of Granby were to plant their talons deep in the quivering flesh of Mr Bright. How it was to be done nobody knew, nobody could guess; but Foskett had said it, the hero of a hundred Protection societies had said it, and who could doubt that he would perform it? Months have rolled by, the promise has been unredeemed, and, if we meet Mr Foskett again, it is in a position which calls for the exercise of proud compassion and magnaminous pity for promises so unaccountably falsified and greatness so disastrously fallen. Where is the Guy Fawkes of Protection now? Where be his lantern and tinderbox, his matches and his train of gunpowder, his cloak, his mask, and his dagger? Oh! Foskett, Foskett! could not all this breath keep in a little life? Could not all this boasting keep enough warmth in thy heart and those of thy co-conspirators to keep alive the fire of resolution, and bring to effect an enterprise so near completion? Alas! Conspiracy has subsided into a grumble, and menace has died away into a whine. Times
