On Friday last an inquest was held before J W Cowley, Esq, Coroner for Bucks, at Olney, on view of the body of Mr Frederick Haddon, jun, a schoolmaster of that place, aged 35. It appeared from the evidence that, in the afternoon of the previous Wednesday, he accompanied his pupils to the river in order that they may bathe. During the time the boys were in the water deceased (who remained on the bank with his clothes on) observed a boy of the town, aged 10, about 40 yards further up the river, getting out of his depth, and evidently struggling for life. He immediately hastened to the spot and jumped in, but not being able to swim he sank himself and rose no more. One of his pupils William Fosket, only 12 years of age, reached the spot just in time to see his master sink. He instantly rushed in to the water, and with much difficulty and exertion rescued the little boy, who was in an apparently lifeless state. The pit was supposed to be at least 10 feet deep and had he (Fosket) been able to dive as well as swim, he thinks he could have saved his master also. Before assistance could be obtained half an hour had elapsed; but every means possible were used to restore life, although ineffectual. Verdict: accidentally drowned.
The Coroner eulogised the extraordinary exertions of Fosket, and made him a handsome present as a reward for his heroic conduct.
