The Police Courts - Guildhall
Henry Odwell, a journeyman butcher, was placed at the bar before Mr Alderman Mechi, charged with obtaining by fraud eleven shoulders of mutton of Mr Foskett, a meat salesman of Newgate market.
Mr Foskett said - In the latter part of November last the prisoner came to my shop, and said he wanted twelve shoulders of mutton for Mr Hales. I asked him if they were for Mr Thomas Hales, of Woodstock Street, and he replied they were for Mr Hales, and I supposed it was Mr Thomas Hales who sent him. I weighed, as I thought, twelve shoulders, with which he went away, but in a short time he returned and said he had only eleven shoulders. I weighed them again and found his statement correct. I told him I had no more, and he said it did not matter, and he took away the eleven shoulders again. I subsequently ascertained that Mr Thomas Hales had never sent the prisoner for the meat in question, and that he never received the eleven shoulders of mutton.
The prisoner, in reply to the charge, said he was sent for the shoulders of mutton by a man in Newgate street, to whom he delivered them, and he did not know where to find him; but on a former conviction for stealing two sheep being proved against him he pleaded guilty and asked to be dealt with summarily.
Alderman Mechi said the prisoner was an old offender and therefore committed him for trial.
