Lambeth - The Day after the Wedding
George Lock, 21, deal porter, living in Peckham Park Road; and Harry Foskett, 20, deal porter, of Devonshire Grove, Old Kent Road, were charged with refusing to leave the Crown and Anchor, Kent Road. Lock was further charged with assaulting the potman of the house, and likewise Police Constable 186 M. On Saturday night the prisoners were in the house, and as it was closing time they were requested to leave. They refused, and Lock attempted to strike the potman with a quart pot. The potman just moved on one side, or he would have received a severe blow on the head. Both prisoners were exceedingly violent, and it was with great difficulty they were removed from the house. Continuing the disturbance outside, Police Constable 195 P came up, when Foskett assaulted him. The constable took him into custody, upon which he commenced struggling very much, and tried to escape; the prisoner Lock endeavouring to assist him. Police constable 186 M, whilst passing home in plain clothes, saw the disturbance, and went to the aid of the other constable. He told Lock he was a constable, upon which Lock replied "Are you, then take that," at the same itme striking him a violent blow on the nose. He struck him a second time, and knocked him down. After being locked up the prisoners were bailed out about two o'clock on Zsunday morning, and later on the prisoner Lock was married. The prisoners now expressed regret, but declared it was only through having a little beer. Mr Chance said the conduct of the prisoners had been disgraceful. He sentenced Lock to three months, and the other prisoner to one month with hard labour. The prisoner Lock seemed astonished at the result, as did also his bride, who was in court.
