Notes for: Silas HURLBUTT

Silas moved his family to Lancaster when his son Samuel was a young man. According to a letter written by Asa to Alba Hurlburt (his brothers) in 1845, Silas lived in Bethlehem on the Sawyer farm and kept a tavern. During his last years he lived with his grandson, Silas Green HGurlbutt, in Dalton, NH. He had been a strong and healthy man accustomed to walking the ten miles to town. One day in 1880 he went for a walk and was never heard from again.
Clarence Hurlbutt wrote on 18 Jun 1947 from Winthrop, ME, the following account of this incident.
"My grandfather's name was Silas G Hurlbutt, and he lived at Martin Meadow Pond, between Lancaster and Whitefield, NH. He lived to be over 80. He used to have fainting spells and one dday he went out on what was known as Page Hill, out of Lancaster, and he seemed to be confused. My Dad and Mother told me of his getting lost, and a Mr Goodale, whom I used to know when I was a youngster, told me the old gentleman came to his place and sat down to rest, and was talking of going across a piece of woodland. He seemed to think he would come into Dalton. Well, this Mr Goodale said he went to hitch up a horse to take him back to Lancaster, but before he got ready, the old man had gone, and was never seen afterward. They found his hat and coat, but never any trace of him. They searched this piece of woods with 200 men abreast for two days, but to no avail.

Besides the children listed there were 5 others who died in infancy.
