Charles went to public school of Meriden and a private school and was taught by William Charles Kellogg. At the age of 15 he was a clerk in Meriden Post Office. He became a bookkeeper for Edward Miller Co, staying there 3 years and then went to the Meriden Britannia Co. He became assistant treasurer of the County.
His wife was not living in the 1880 census and her mother was living with the family.
