He learned the dry goods business at Springfield, MA, of H N Carter and was with him about 5 years. He left this position to enter business on his own account in the small manufacturing town of Ashaway, RI, in dry goods and groceries; sold out at the end of 3 years. After that he lived at Providence and was employed 4 years by the A & W Sprague Mfg Co as a bookkeeper at the Cranston Print Works, and then became a salesman in aretail dry goods house in Providence. For many years he was in charge of the office of the CRanston Perkins Horseshoe Co at Pawtuxet Neck. He was an honorary member of the Volunteer Fire Co No 1.
