Josiah became a doctor. He had learned the trade of machinist, went west in 1851 and then came to Boston where he began the study of medicine with Dr Green, For 9 months of the Civil War he assisted in taking care of the sick and wounded soldiers at Washington. He then attended a medical college in Phila, graduating in 1865. After practising a short time in Boston, he settled in West Boyston where he remained until the death of his father. He then removed to Great Falls, NH where he gained a large and successful practice.

In the Spring of 1881 he was obliged to go south for his health but he received no benefit and had to give up his practice. In July 1881 he lost all use of his lower limbs from paralysis.
