In Feb 1814, the pioneers in Darien were disturbed by the report that the Indians in the employ of the British were on their way from the lake region to burn and destroy this infant settlement. Deacon William B Garfield, cousin of the late President Garfield, with his family and Jonathan Vaughn with his, all loaded into an old sled hitched to a pair of horses, retreated two and a half miles in the night and broke the sled near the cabin of their neighbor, Mr Peck. They remained there and soon got news from Batavia that the Indians were not on the "war path".

He purchased 143 acres in Genesee Co., NY on 16 Oct 1833 for $522.50. David Halstead, who had married William's sister Laura Garfield, bough land next to him on the same day.

On the 20th March 1861 letters of administration of the estate of the deceased William B Garfield, late of Alexander, NY, were given to Samuel M Garfield, his son, and Daniel S Jones. On the 27th Mar 1861 an inventory was filed in the Surrogate's office totalling $1,175.40. The heirs were Mary A Jones of Rose, MI., daughter of the deceased; Philomela Chapin of Rose, MI, daughter of the deceased; Harriet N Simonds of Paris, MI, daughter of the deceased; Elizabeth S Smith of Wauwatosa, WI, daughter of the deceased; George M and Jennie L Brown, children of E Lorette Brown and grandchildren of the deceased; Julian W and Lelia E Johnson of Alexander, children o0f E. Jane Johnson and grandchildren of the deceased. They each received $60.20.
