Notes for: Dennis HATHAWAY

Dennis was found in Victory Township, Mason Co., MI in 1870 with his wife Hope (Born NY ca 1818) and 4 children. He may have had other children, such as Isaac N Hathaway who died 10 Sep 1906, inmate of National Home, born Ticonderoga, NY and resident of W. Rutland, VT when he married Phebe Selina Westcott 20 Nov 1858. His 5 living children were born between 1868 and 1885 and were named James, Frank, Willie, Mary and Hattie. The last 2 were with their parents in Burlington, IA in 1880 and Martin probably died before 12 Apr 1898 when Dennis applied for his pension.

Dennis enlisted at Battle Creek, MI 27 Aug 1861 as a private in I Company, Merrill's Horse, 2nd MO Cavalry to serve 3 years, but was disabled 15 Sep 1864 when his horse fell on him during cavalry drill near Palmyra, MO in 1862. He was mustered in as a Corporal at St Louis, deserted on 14 Jun 1862 at Fayette, MO in 1862, present as a private on detached service to Pine Bluff, Ark from 26 Oct 1863 to 31 Aug 1864. But there is no evidence of a ruptured right side in either the company or regimental books.

Martin born 1880 and died before 1898
James Henry born Hebron, NY, 1869 (see below)
Frank E born possibly 1883 and resided in Goodman, MO
William born possibly 1885, alive in 1898 and went to Florida.

Giles B born VT, died South Haven, MI 02 May 1916 age 70 years and 4 months enlisted Company A 7th Cavalry (Mich 37/63) on 15 Oct 1862. He was mustered out at Fort Leavenworth, KS on 15 Dec 1865 and his residence was Merrill, WI 1895. He has a Civil War Marker in Merrill, WI. His wife Emma J was born 1847 and died 1910.

James H was mustered out 28 Jul 1865 and may be the same one who was in Detroit in 1880.
Walter enlisted Co E 20th Infantry (Mich 20/47) at Springport on 08 Aug 1862 and was killed in action near Spottsylvania, VA on 11 May 1864. He is buried in the National Cemetery, Fredericksburg, VA and his mother was Hope.
