Chauncey prepared to Yale at Phillips Academy, Andover, MA. After being one year in Yale he spent three years in agriculture and newspaper work, then resumed his studies at Yale and graduated AB 1896. He was for one year assistant and afterward instructor in rhetoric. In 1901 became assistant professor in English in the University of California and was made associate professor in 1908, which position he still holds. He edited "A Book of Prose Narratives", published by Ginn & Co.
