Rufus came to Winham Co., VT, as a small child with his parents. In the 1820 Westminster, VT, census he is listed with 2 males over 10, 1 male 26-45, 1 female 10-16 and 1 female 25-45. He was also there in 1810. He was #5 in the list of Captains of West Parish (Westminster West) militia formed in 1810.

In 1825 he was in NY State Census in Painted Post with 4 males, 5 females, 2 members of the militia and 3 voters. In 1825 Painted Post included the town of Hornby where they settled. In the 1830 Census for the town of Hornby, Steuben Co., NY he is listed with 1 male 20-30, 1 female 10-15, 2 feamles 15-20 , 1 male 50-60 and 1 female 50-60.

Rufus and Eleanor were admitted as charter members of Hornby Presbyterian Church on 15 Sep 1831 along with Alonson, Philena, Polly and Rachel. Eleanor was dismissed 30 Jul 1837 along with Rufus and Philena Gaylord. They probably moved in with Alonzo and Philena Gaylord who had been living for several years in Monterey, Orange Township, in that part of Steuben Co that later became Schuyler County. In the 1850 Census Rufus and Eleanor are listed there with the Gaylords.

He married first in Putney, VT on 8 Jun 1795 to Polly Shipley who died 25 Feb 1803 (GS: Westminster West Cemetery, Westminster, VT) They had 3 children: Luther b 28 Sep 1795; Mahalah b 07 Apr 1798 and Calvin b 06 Dec 1799 all in Westminster, VT.
