He followed the lumber camps and so the family moved quite often. They lived in shacks mostly and his son Andrew says they lived in only one real house that he can remember. After his wife died he left the family and got on a boat to Europe. The 5 children were put on a train for Dudley, MA and were taken in by their grandparents, Rodney and Mary Dunham. Soon the older ones were sent to other families.
