He was of Marlboro, MA at time of marriage. John and Phebe were given the homeplace of John Foskett in the distribution of his estate in 1780. They were also given care of her mother Elizabeth Fosket.

John was in the Revolutionary War from Bolton. From "Soldiers of Oakham, Mass in the Rev. War" it says: "John Brown marched in Capt Crawford's Co on the Rhode Island and Bennington alarms and paid one half of the expense of sending a man to New York for a term of 5 months. On 23 Jun 1773 he signed the petition to the Council for the organisation of the Oakham Church in Congregational form."

He was constable for Oakham, MA in 1779 (History of Oakham) and John and his wife were living in Oakham at the time of the census in 1790.
